Very sad to see the injured baboon limping along on three limbs with what looks like a damaged right shoulder or right arm broken near the shoulder. I first spotted it over a week ago, but it looks like it is getting very tired trying to keep up with the others. No idea how it can climb a tree with the others to sleep at night. I guess there isn’t anything that can be done, as you can’t just grab it out of the troupe to take it to a vet – nature I suppose.
The site doesn’t seem to be live any more. Every time I have looked recently it has only been showing highlights.
Is this a permanent change?
Hello,
I am curious about the old stone building foundations on the banks of the Olifants River. Who lived there I wonder?
Or is it maybe part of Naledi Lodge where they are doing renovations?
I am enjoying the wildlife along the peaceful riverπ
Olifants River Cam update (23 March 2023): According to Africam, “there is a damaged fibre cable, no animal suspects yet”.
Hopefully things will get fixed asap.
Thank you for your patience.
It’s back now but the sound is still not working. (It’s not me or my browser. It works on other sites)
Back now. Nice to hear the river again!
As this feed seems to have been down for some time, an alternative feed from the same camera can be found here – https://explore.org/livecams/african-wildlife/olifants-river
Thanks Jack, though it is finally working now! π
What’s with all the annoying lion “highlights” every few minutes?
Lions are great, but not when I’m watching live baboons or hippos. This is really irritating!
Doesn’t seem to be a live site at the moment – just endless “highlights”. Is the camera broken?
Hi Richard,
I’m glad you pointed that out.
These things do happen at times (the camera is currently offline), but the live feed should be back soon.
Thank you for your patience.
WHAT IS ALL THE TRAFFIC NOISE?
What do you mean exactly, Ben?
If you’re referring to the background noise, it’s coming both from the camera and the river flow.
I think we know the difference between the sounds cameras and rivers make and the sounds from a building site. We can hear heavy machinery, complete with reversing horns, heavy objects being dropped and workmen shouting at each other. What is going on and doesn’t it keep some of the animals away?
Hi Jack,
I can hear the annoying sounds as well. There’s definitely construction work, though I do not have more info at this point.
Perhaps they’re upgrading the facilities at Naledi Game Lodge? Or improving road infrastructure?
Noise does indeed have an impact on wildlife. Let’s hope this is only temporary.
I also love the sleeping baboons…What was that horrendous noise last night…sounded like hippos fighting or something wounded?
Hi Catherine,
Hippos, are you sure?
Or maybe black-backed jackals calling (they can be pretty horrifying)?

Fascinating to observe the sleeping mother baboon and her child.
You wonder what they are dreaming.
They must have tremendous balancing capability to sleep on a limb.
Thanks for making these viewings possible.
Happy you enjoyed the “baboon show” there, Michael! π
